The secret to increasing productivity and staff engagement for any organisation is a simple, yet powerful, tweek to their business model.  Not a big change, but one that adds competitive advantage to your business and to your bottom line.  By recognising the innovation in your people, you create a culture of increased innovation.  Out of many small ideas big things flow. This gives you the edge on your competition and keeps you focussed on improving all of the time.  These comments by Mark Ryan Hargraves Institute SA.

The Hargraves Institute, Australia’s leading thinking tank and knowledge hub on innovation, is assisting SA enterprises accelerate their productivity through a proven process of employee innovation recognition and leadership in innovation.  Hargraves is working closely with the Polaris Centre Salisbury and the City of Playford to reinvigorate innovation in enterprises in the north.

Hargraves has called it Spark Change – it is an Innovator Recognition Program that has national recognition through the Innovation Business Skills Australia Council (IBSA).  It works and it provides results quite quickly.  It will help SA businesses to grow and to prosper.

This new business model used in Spark Change has been proven in some of Hargraves member companies – for example Coca Cola Amatil – CCA and Roche have moved towards this culture over the past three years saving millions of dollars to the bottom line and increasing productivity.

Allan Ryan, Executive Director of Hargraves, says that the best thing is that once you get it started it is self sustaining and can be run without outside assistance.  We will be rolling it out in the North this month – through the Polaris Centre, in the first instance.  Two examples of these results are:

‘Last year we collected over 650 ideas, implemented 80% within 2 weeks and continue to work on the rest.  Our overall staff engagement has increased from 55% to 64% with one workgroup recording an increase from 38% to 58%.  We saved millions of dollars to our bottom line.’
Mr Derek O’Donnell
State Supply Chain Manager – Victoria/Tasmania Coca-Cola Amatil

‘After three years of our program we reduced our recruitment and staff turn over costs by over $1m per annum now that is impressive.’
Mr Stephen Tracey
HR Director
Roche Products
